ABOUT THE HUNTER’S (FULL) MOON
The Hunter's Moon, peaking this year on October 17, 2024, is not just another full moon but the closest supermoon of the year, laden with rich significance and unique astronomical characteristics. Originating from Algonquin Native American tradition, it marks a time traditionally used for hunting and preparing for the winter, offering bright moonlight shortly after sunset that aids in these types of activities. While its usual October appearance aligns with the autumn equinox, it can occasionally fall in November, taking on other names such as the Falling Leaves Moon or the Migrating
Moon, which reflects the seasonal behaviours of both flora and fauna. This full moon is particularly noteworthy for its early evening visibility over several days, appearing larger and more orange than usual due to atmospheric effects when viewed near the horizon. Such visibility historically assisted hunters and farmers by extending daylight working hours.
